That might be a good load for larger game, but over kill for deer. I've killed deer with a 50 with about 80 grains of 2f and it did just fine.Start with a powder charge of 55 grains and work up an accurate load in 5 grain increments. My .54 only gives me decent accuracy using 2f but that may not be the case with yours. 55 grains, 3 shots, swab between shots, increase by 5 grains and repeat procedure until you get a nice tight group.Reaction score. 336. These hole direct the blow back gases outward and help split the cap for easy removal. My other choice of nipples would be the Knight "Red Hot". Both nipples come in sizes to fit your rifles. This can cut the groove deeper and is advanced to the next groove. Then a paper shim is placed under the cutter and the process is repeated till the grooves are deepened to your goal. Figure out the width of the spring steel you will cut from the paper binder, use a wood chisel and chisel a spot for the new cut spring to lay. A good load for mine is 25-30 grains of FFG. takes the heads from small game out to 30 yards, 47 grains is a great all around woods carry-target load but 65 grs is better when deer are in season.Similarily, 1860s are .44s. The smaller sized, but similar looking 1861 is a .36. IMO, .44s are ungainly and overly heavy. While .36s are svelte and graceful... On top of all that, .36s are also more economical to shoot. Less powder and small projectiles, mean you get more per lb of lead.Both rifles are Investarm rifles, the flintlock is a Lyman Great Plains Rifle and the percussion is a Cabela's .58 caliber Hawken. I'm thinking about swapping out the percussion breech plug on one rifle for the flintlock breech plug on another. The flintlock is .50 caliber and the percussion is .58 caliber. They cost about $90 at the time (10 years ago). The rotating jaws are very useful. The leg vises on the bench are very handy and have tremendous holding power.Turn it with an electric drill, and run the emery up and down the barrel a couple of hundred times; that should remove a lot of the pits unless they are very deep. Change the emery often to keep it sharp. Finish up with very fine emery to polish.
